Anesthesiologist Assistant Schools and Colleges

To become an Anesthesiologist Assistants individuals are required to first complete either a bachelor of science (BS) or bachelor of art (BA) degree from an accredited college or university. Coursework should focus on biology, chemistry, math, and physics.

Once a bachelor's degree has been completed aspiring Anesthesiologist Assistants must complete a 2-year master's level anesthesiology assistant training program. The anesthesiology assistant training program is designed to provide students with a basic understanding of pharmacology, anatomy, phiology, and biochemistry and indepth knowledge in respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, renal and neuromuscular systems.

In addition to class room instruction, students will receive hands on training in a clinical setting designed to help students learn how to effectively deliver anesthesia, monitor patients, administer life support, and perform patient assessments.

When reviewing anesthesiologist assistant schools look for a program that meet the following criteria:
  • Accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP).
  • Instructors are doctors who are board-certified in anesthesiology.
  • Works closely with an accredited medical school
  • Offers ample hands-on clinical training in addition to classroom instruction
Most anesthesiologist assistant programs require the following in order to graduate as an Anesthesiologist Assistant:
  • 500 to 600 hours of coursework (both classroom and laboratory)
  • 2000 hours of clinical training
  • 50 didactic hours of study
  • Pass a 6-hour exam administered by the National Commission for the Certification of Anesthesiology Assistants (NCCAA).
In addition, students will be taught effective communication skills so that the can effectively function as part of a team.

Once students become certified Anesthesiology Assistants they're required to complete at minimum 40 hours of continuing education every two years and recertify every six years by taking an industry standard re-certification exam.
