Athletic Trainer Schools and Colleges

Most athletic trainer jobs require that applicants have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in athletic training from an accredited college or university program. However, many athletic trainers today also possess a master's degree in the field. When considering potential programs you'll want to verify the program is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) or another reputable accrediting body. Most athletic trainer programs include extensive courseswork as well as hands-on clinical training. Courses you can expect to take as a student include anatomy, nutrition, physiology, biomechanics and a variety of other science and health-related subjects.

To increase your career advancement opportunities, or to qualify for college and university career positions, it is recommend that you earn a master's degree in athletic training in addition to a bachelor's degree. High school students who are serious about a career in athletic training can prepare by taking courses in anatomy, physics, and physiology.

Most states in the US require that athletic trainers become certified and/or licensed before they can practice professionally. The standard certification exam that most states require for licensure is offered by the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC). Becoming and remaining certified requires that you pass the BOC exam, adhere to the BOC Standards of Practice and Disciplinary Process, and keep your skills and knowledge current by taking continuing education courses on a regular basis. Licensing requirements may vary by state so you should contact your local state regulatory agency for specific information on licensing requirements.

Below you'll find a comprehensive directory of accredited athletic trainer schools, colleges, and universities offering certificates, bachelor's and master's degree.
