Community Health Worker Schools and Colleges

There is no national standard for training to become a Community Health Worker (CHW). In fact, educational requirements will vary from city to city, state to state, and from employer to employer. Since there are no unified educational requirements, training is typically general and often dictated by the employer.

In some states, however, there are now college-based training programs and in others community-based training resources for aspiring community health workers. In addition, many states are beginning to develop training and credentialing criteria with input from current community health professionals and community healthcare leaders.

If you want to launch a career as a community health worker, you should identify which companies or organizations you're interested in working for and then find out what type of education and training they require. Some employers will only require that candidates have a high school diploma or GED, while others will insist that candidates have a 4-year degree from an accredited college. Irregardless of educational background, community health workers typically receive an additional 100 to 200 hours of training on the job, via direct classroom instruction, mentoring or a combination of the two.

Below you'll find schools, community colleges and 4-year colleges offering degrees and programs that are relevant for becoming a community health worker.
