Cytotechnology Schools and Colleges

Earning a bachelor's degree in a relevant subject from an accredited college or university is the first step to becoming a cytotechnologist. Once you've earned your bachelor's degree you must then graduate from an accredited cytotechnology program.

Like many technologist programs in medicine and healthcare, the cytotechnology program is a 1 to 2 year program depending on the school you attend. The first year is dedicated to core and prerequisite courses and the second to more specialized, career-oriented subject matter.

Most cytotechnology programs include the following prerequisites:
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Other physical sciences
Second year course study often includes:
  • cytologic procedures/technologies
  • mathematics and/or statistics
  • scientific method of inquiry
  • laboratory operations and techniques
  • ancillary testing and related technologies
  • screening and interpretation
  • professional development
Upon successful completion of the cytotechnogist program, students will be prepared to sit for the National Certification Exam which they must pass before the can become a certified cytotechnologist.
