Dental Laboratory Technician Schools and Colleges

Dental laboratory technicians are required to hold a high school or general equivalency degree at a minimum. High school students interested in dental laboratory careers should take classes in information technology, science, and math while in school. Many dentists and dental labs provide on-the-job training to newly-hired dental laboratory technicians.

Community and vocational colleges offer certificate and 2 year programs in dental laboratory technician training. Current technicians often learn new job skills by completing continuing education. Those interested in this field should complete a program recognized by the American Dental Associationís Commission on Dental Accreditation. As of 2008, 20 accredited programs were available nationwide.

Students enrolled in these programs complete extensive classroom and clinical training. They learn about laboratory technology operation, safety procedures, dental science and anatomy, bridge and denture construction, applicable mathematical concepts, and plaster use.

The National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC) administers certification programs for dental laboratory technicians. 3 states require technicians to be certified, but technicians living in states not requiring certification enhance job opportunities by satisfying this organizationís certification requirements. NBC also offers certification programs for technicians specializing in dentures, bridges, and crowns. To become certified, technicians must satisfy work experience requirements and pass practical and written exams.
