The average wage nationwide for a sonographer is $62,660 a year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The median wage for the same time period is about $61,980 nationwide.

The state you choose to work in may also be a factor affecting your level of compensation. According to PayScale, a diagnostic medical sonographer working in California may earn a median hourly wage of $32, while someone with the same experience working in Ohio may earn only $25 an hour.

Sonographers working for hospitals tend to earn less than those working for other healthcare institutions, making roughly $28 an hour for median earnings. Professionals not working for hospitals may earnin as high as $40 per hour.
