Diagnostic Medical Sonography Schools and Colleges

To become a diagnostic medical sonographer you'll need to earn a certificate, associate's or bachelor's degree from an accredited sonography program. A certificate program usually only takes about one year to complete but is typically only useful for individuals who are already employed in a related healthcare field, such as nursing or radiology. Most accredited sonography programs offer a very similar curriculum which includes extensive coursework and hands-on clinical training. As a sonography student you'll learn how to interpret sonograpnic images and communicate your assessments to other healthcare professionals. Many sonography programs offer specialized tracks that prepare students to work in specific sonography disciplines such as breast sonography or abdominal sonography.

Radiologic technologists and registered nurses are often able to transition into a sonography career through on-the-job training provided by their employers. Pre-college students interested in a career in diagnostic medical sonography should take courses in biology, physiology, anatomy, and mathematics.

While not absolutely necessary, earning your professional certification in sonography can be very useful. Most employers like hiring sonographers who have a professional certification. Professional certification will help create credibility with potential employers. Certification is obtained by graduating from an accredited sonography program then passing a state exam. A few states require that diagnostic medical sonographers become certified before they can practice.

Below you'll find diagnostic medical sonography schools, colleges, and universities offering accredited degrees, career training programs and continuing education courses in diagnostic medical sonography.
