Family Doctor/Physician Salary Information

Family doctors typically earn anywhere between $125,000-161,000 a year at the beginning of their careers. Salaries are affected by clientele size, setting, and geographic region. Those with years of experience can earn $180,000 or more a year. Doctors in rural regions also receive large annual salaries.

The mean hourly wage for family and general practitioners was $81.03 and the mean annual wage, or average salary, was $168,550, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009.

The PayScale website lists the starting salary of family physicians. In October 2010, family physicians with less than 1 year of experienced earned anywhere from between $100,014 to $146,996.

Offices of physicians employed the largest number of family and general practitioners with an average salary of $174,280, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other industries that employed large numbers of family and general practitioners were: general medical and surgical hospitals, $157,470; outpatient care centers, $174,590; the local government, $144,640; and the state government, $131,010.

The office administrative services industry paid the highest average salary above all other industries to family and general practitioners with $193,250, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other industries that offered high pay were: medical and diagnostic laboratories, $189,840; employment services, $180,910; insurance carriers, $174,610; and outpatient care centers, $174,590.

Arkansas paid the highest average salary above all other states to family and general practitioners with $206,030, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009. Other states that offered high pay were: Wisconsin, $203,040; Wyoming, $194,680; Utah, $191,600; and Georgia, $188,620.
