Homecare Assisting Schools and Colleges

Most health and personal care aides have completed high school, although not all organizations require this to be hired. These healthcare workers typically get trained by nurses, managers, or other aides after being hired.

Aides learn how to perform CPR and other basic emergency medical services, clean medical instruments, and perform basic housekeeping duties, such as preparing meals for patients with dietary restrictions.

Most employers administer a competency assessment to ensure aides are capable of performing job duties. It typically takes aides time to feel at ease working with patients.

Certain state licensing boards only require aides to complete on-the-job training, which is usually administered by employers. Formal training is required in other states. Training can be completed at vocational and community colleges. Most states conduct background checks on newly hired aides.

Promotion opportunities in this field are limited for aides without formal training. Below you can browse a comprehensive directory of home health and personal care schools.
