Medical Coding Schools and Colleges

Medical coders are required to hold high school or general equivalency degrees at a minimum. According to the American Medical Association (AMA), aspiring medical coders should be prepared to complete a post-secondary training program. Some healthcare organizations train newly hired medical coders, but most recruit applicants who’ve completed post-secondary training.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the majority of medical coders hold associate’s degrees or professional certificates. Students enrolled in medical coding training programs are required to complete classes in medications, diseases, medical terminology, medical coding systems, and medical record coding. During these courses, students learn how to create and disseminate medical codes. Entry-level coding jobs can be obtained with a certificate, but those with undergraduate or graduate degrees have better job and promotion opportunities. Information about accredited medical coding programs is available from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

According to the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), medical coders are not required to be certified, but those who are certified can demand higher pay and typically enjoy better job opportunities. Additionally, certified medical coders remain updated with industry changes since they’re required to complete continuing education to remain certified.
