Medical Schools and Colleges

Medical school applicants are required to hold a bachelorís or graduate degree to be considered for admission. Medical schools do not require specific majors, but they do require the completion of prerequisites in English, math, physics, chemistry, biology, and anatomy. Students can improve their chances of admission by volunteering at hospitals, clinics, or other settings where healthcare is administered.

Admission to medical school is very competitive. All applicants are required to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), submit letters of recommendation, and submit official transcripts from all institutions attended. Medical school admission committees also take into consideration extracurricular activities, leadership abilities, and potential for success when making admission decisions. Many schools conduct interviews with applicants.

Some medical schools offer joint bachelorís/medical degree programs. Exceptional students are usually admitted to these programs which can be completed in 6-7 years.

Medical students spend the first couple of years completing classroom and laboratory instruction in anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, medical ethics, psychology, and medical laws. Students also obtain clinical experience by learning how to diagnose disease, evaluate patients, and administer medical treatments.

The final 2 years of medical school are spent treating patients under the direction of licensed doctors. Students obtain experience diagnosing and treating patients during clinical rotations in pediatrics, gynecology, family practice, and internal medicine.

Medical school is expensive. In fact, doctors graduate medical school with significant student loan debt. Below you'll find a directory of accredited medical schools and colleges.
