Nuclear Medicine Technology Schools and Colleges

Most nuclear medicine technologists hold associate’s degrees. Bachelor’s degrees are also available in nuclear medicine technology. Medical professionals with degrees in nursing or another healthcare field often make career transitions into nuclear medicine technology after completing a yearlong certification program. Hospitals usually administer nuclear medicine technology certification programs. Community colleges offer associate’s degree programs and universities and colleges offer bachelor’s degree programs in nuclear medicine technology.

Nuclear medicine technology students also obtain clinical experience where they’re supervised by a doctor specializing in nuclear medicine. They also obtain classroom instruction in computer science, pharmacology, chemistry, physics, physiology, and anatomy. Certain states require nuclear medicine technologists to satisfy licensing requirements, but they differ by state. Specific details about licensure is available from state health boards.

Nuclear medicine technologists often become certified. This is not a requirement for state licensure, but certified technologists usually complete the same requirements mandated by licensing boards.

Most states require uncertified technologists to pass a test and satisfy other requirements to become certified. Some hospitals and other medical clinics only hire nationally certified technologists. You must complete an accredited training program and obtain a certain amount of clinical experience to become nationally certified.

To remain certified, nuclear medicine technologists are required to periodically complete continuing education.
