Dispensing Optician and Optimology Colleges

Dispensing opticians typically hold a high school degree. They also learn job skills, such as measuring and adjusting frames, on the job, in addition to office management and sales skills.

Numerous vocational and community colleges offer dispensing optician training programs. Some schools offer associate’s degree programs that take years to complete. Dispensing opticians usually obtain professional certificates after one year of study. The Commission on Opticianry Accreditation currently recognizes 21 associate's degree programs throughout the nation.

Students complete courses in business management, optical physics, optical mathematics, eye physiology, optics, and numerous other classes. Students must also obtain clinical experience and learn how to use measuring equipment. Certain programs offer online classes.

Students interested in this field should complete courses in anatomy, trigonometry, algebra, and anatomy. Opticians are required to be licensed in 23 states. Typically licensure requirements mandate completion of a training program or apprenticeship. Opticians are also required to pass one of the following tests: a practical exam, a written exam, or other certification exams. Requirements vary by state.

Most states also require opticians to periodically renew licenses. To do so, most complete continuing education courses.
