Pharmacist Schools and Colleges

All Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) programs require that prerequisite courses in anatomy, biology, and chemistry be completed before being considered for admission. Applicants must compete 2-3 years of college study before being admitted, but most hold a bachelorís degree before applying. Pharmacy schools also require applicants to take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT).

It usually takes 4 years to complete a Pharm.D program, but some programs offer 3 year accelerated study options. Students enrolled in these programs complete extensive study of medical ethics and pharmacology. Students also complete clinical training at retail pharmacies and hospitals.

Pharmacists interested in pharmaceutical research or clinical pharmacy must complete a 1-2 year residency after graduating from a Pharm. D program. Pharmacists interested in managing a pharmacy often earn masterís degrees in public health or business administration.

Pharmacists are required to become state licensed. After graduating from pharmacy school, you must pass 2 tests to become professionally licensed. One test covers pharmacy knowledge, while the other covers state controlled substance laws.
