Phlebotomy Schools and Colleges

Phlebotomists typically complete hands-on and classroom training. Phlebotomists without college degrees are often hired, but many earn associate’s degrees prior to entering the workforce. Some phlebotomists earn undergraduate degrees in medical technology. These programs cover venipuncture, vascular physiology and anatomy, blood handling procedures, safety procedures, and skin puncture techniques.

Some states require phlebotomists to become certified. The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians and the National Phlebotomy Association administer certification programs. Each organization requires minimum work experience and education requirements. Certified phlebotomists must complete continuing education requirements once a year to remain certified. Phlebotomists learn about medical ethics and law, patient injury, venipuncture, blood contamination, and other topics in continuing education classes.
