Medical Doctor Salary Information

During 2008, physicians who exclusively provided primary care earned median annual salaries just over $186,000 a year. Physicians who specialized made about $339,738 annually.

Physicians have the option of specializing in general surgery, primary practice, or internal medicine. A doctor’s specialty affects the type of education, certification, and licensing he or she must complete. During 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, physicians who practiced internal medicine earned average salaries of $183,990 a year. Physicians who specialized in family practice made average annual salaries of $168,550, while surgeons averaged $219,770 annually.

Most physicians work in private clinics. Physicians specializing in internal medicine employed at hospitals earn average annual salaries of $161,660, while general practitioners employed at hospitals average $157,470 a year. Surgeons who work primarily at hospitals average $191,200 a year.
