Speech Language Pathologist Salary Information

The median starting salary for speech pathologists is around $44,000 as of 2008, with an increase to about $52,700 after five years of experience. About 80 percent earn between $38,000 and $90,000. Narrowing it down further, the middle 50 percent earn between $55,000 and $68,000.

Those working in pediatric services enjoy salaries that average about $90,000, and those working on an as-needed basis take home $90,000 to $111,000. Technical writing in speech pathology also provides an excellent opportunity at a median salary of around $70,000 a year.

School districts and nonprofit agencies offer the lowest rate of pay, typically between $46,000 to $53,000 on average.

Speech pathologists who speak a second language, particularly Spanish, are in great demand. Self-employed speech pathologists also enjoy higher pay because of the increasing trend for hospitals, nursing homes and schools to hire contract services. Average pay in 2008 for self-employed speech pathologists was around $66,000.
